What does this test include?
This panel measures serum iron and total iron-binding capacity, allowing calculation of transferrin saturation. It helps show how much iron is circulating and how much carrying capacity is available.
Why might it be ordered?
- To investigate anaemia, suspected iron deficiency or possible iron overload.
- To add context to ferritin or blood-count changes.
What sample is needed?
A blood sample is required. The laboratory chooses the correct tube and handles the sample for this test.
How should you prepare?
The laboratory may prefer a morning fasting sample. Report iron supplements or recent infusion; do not change treatment without advice.
How are the results reported?
Iron and saturation vary and are affected by inflammation and timing. Ferritin, CBC and clinical history are usually needed for a complete assessment.
