What is this test?
Urea is produced when the body breaks down protein and is cleared mainly by the kidneys. Its level reflects kidney handling but also hydration, protein intake and tissue breakdown.
Why might it be ordered?
- To support assessment of kidney function and hydration.
- To monitor an illness or treatment that may change urea production or clearance.
What sample is needed?
A blood sample is required. The laboratory chooses the correct tube and handles the sample for this test.
How should you prepare?
Ask the laboratory whether you need to fast or attend at a particular time. Do not stop or change medicines or supplements unless your clinician tells you to.
How should you understand the result?
A high or low value is not specific for kidney disease. Creatinine, eGFR, hydration, diet and clinical history help explain it.
