Explained in plain language

What is this test?

Total bilirubin measures bilirubin from red-cell breakdown in its unconjugated and conjugated forms. The liver processes it for excretion in bile.

Why might it be ordered?

  • To investigate jaundice, dark urine, anaemia or possible liver or bile-duct disease.
  • To follow a known bilirubin or liver abnormality.

What sample is needed?

A blood sample is required. The laboratory chooses the correct tube and handles the sample for this test.

How should you prepare?

Ask the laboratory whether you need to fast or attend at a particular time. Do not stop or change medicines or supplements unless your clinician tells you to.

How should you understand the result?

The pattern with direct bilirubin, liver enzymes and blood counts helps distinguish possible causes. A mild isolated rise can have benign explanations but still needs context.
