What is this test?
Total protein mainly reflects albumin and globulins in blood. It can change with hydration, liver or kidney disease, inflammation, immune proteins and nutrition.
Why might it be ordered?
- To investigate swelling, weight loss, liver or kidney concerns or an abnormal albumin.
- As part of a broader metabolic or liver assessment.
What sample is needed?
A blood sample is required. The laboratory chooses the correct tube and handles the sample for this test.
How should you prepare?
Ask the laboratory whether you need to fast or attend at a particular time. Do not stop or change medicines or supplements unless your clinician tells you to.
How should you understand the result?
A normal total can hide opposing changes in albumin and globulins. Albumin, calculated globulin and sometimes electrophoresis provide more detail.
