What is this test?
High-sensitivity troponin T detects very small amounts of a heart-muscle protein released with myocardial injury. It helps assess suspected heart attack but can rise in other cardiac and systemic conditions.
Why might it be ordered?
- For urgent assessment of chest pain or symptoms suggesting acute coronary syndrome.
- To detect and follow heart-muscle injury using timed repeat measurements.
What sample is needed?
A blood sample is required. The laboratory chooses the correct tube and handles the sample for this test.
How should you prepare?
New chest pressure, breathlessness, sweating, collapse or pain spreading to the arm, back or jaw requires emergency care; do not wait for an outpatient test.
How should you understand the result?
Clinicians use the value, change over time, symptom timing and ECG together. A rise shows myocardial injury but does not by itself establish the cause or prove a heart attack.
