Explained in plain language

What does this test include?

The panel measures specific IgE antibodies to 112 allergens, including foods, pollens, mites, animals and molds. It identifies allergens to which laboratory sensitization is detected.

Why might it be ordered?

  • With complex or unclear symptoms, when the medical history points to more than one group of allergens.
  • When skin testing is not appropriate or additional laboratory information is needed for a wide range of allergens.

What sample is needed?

A healthcare professional collects a venous blood sample. Depending on the method, the laboratory uses serum or plasma.

How should you prepare?

Fasting is usually not required. Prepare a description of your symptoms, likely exposures and how soon reactions began so the results can be compared with your history. Tell the laboratory about all medicines, hormone treatments, vitamins and supplements you take. Do not stop or change treatment unless your clinician tells you to. Follow any instructions about fasting and the time of collection.

How are the results reported?

Each of the 112 allergens is reported separately. A positive specific IgE indicates sensitization, but is not sufficient for a clinical diagnosis and does not reliably predict the severity of a reaction.
