Explained in plain language

What is this test?

Copper is a trace element needed for blood formation, nerves and enzymes. Blood levels are affected by the copper-carrying protein ceruloplasmin, inflammation, pregnancy and hormones.

Why might it be ordered?

  • To investigate suspected copper deficiency or excess.
  • As part of specialist evaluation for Wilson disease or unexplained neurological, liver or blood findings.

What sample is needed?

A blood sample is required. The laboratory chooses the correct tube and handles the sample for this test.

How should you prepare?

Ask the laboratory whether you need to fast or attend at a particular time. Do not stop or change medicines or supplements unless your clinician tells you to.

How should you understand the result?

Serum copper alone cannot diagnose Wilson disease or prove deficiency. Ceruloplasmin, urine copper and specialist tests may be needed.
