What is this test?
LDL cholesterol measures cholesterol carried in low-density lipoproteins. Higher lifelong exposure contributes to plaque formation in arteries and is a major treatment target.
Why might it be ordered?
- To estimate cardiovascular risk and guide prevention.
- To monitor response and adherence to lipid-lowering treatment.
What sample is needed?
A blood sample is required. The laboratory chooses the correct tube and handles the sample for this test.
How should you prepare?
Ask the laboratory whether you need to fast or attend at a particular time. Do not stop or change medicines or supplements unless your clinician tells you to.
How should you understand the result?
The appropriate LDL goal depends on your existing cardiovascular disease and overall risk. Calculated LDL can be less reliable with very high triglycerides or in some nonfasting samples.
