What is this test?
Lactate is produced during normal metabolism and can rise when production exceeds clearance. Significant elevation may occur with poor tissue perfusion, severe illness, seizures, strenuous exercise and some medicines or metabolic conditions.
Why might it be ordered?
- For urgent assessment and monitoring of a seriously ill person.
- To investigate selected metabolic, exercise-related or medicine-associated questions.
What sample is needed?
A blood sample requires prompt, protocol-specific handling because delay and collection conditions can change lactate.
How should you prepare?
Rest before a non-emergency sample if instructed and avoid clenching or prolonged tourniquet use. In an emergency, clinical care takes priority over preparation.
How should you understand the result?
A raised value is not specific for sepsis or oxygen deprivation. Trend, symptoms, circulation, liver function and sample quality all matter.
