Explained in plain language

What does this test include?

A preoperative panel containing CBC, glucose, urea, creatinine, AST, ALT, prothrombin time/INR, APTT, and ABO blood group with Rh type. It gives the surgical team information relevant to blood cells, kidney and liver markers, clotting and transfusion planning.

Why might it be ordered?

  • Before an operation when requested by the surgical or anaesthetic team.
  • To identify results that may require discussion or additional testing before a procedure.

What sample is needed?

The panel may require one or more samples. The laboratory will confirm the material needed for every included test.

How should you prepare?

Follow the instructions from the surgical team and laboratory. Tell them about anticoagulants and all other medicines, but do not stop any medicine unless the treating clinician instructs you to.

How are the results reported?

The surgical team decides whether the results are suitable for the planned procedure. An out-of-range value does not automatically mean that surgery must be cancelled.
