PCR testing for whooping cough

21 May 2025

Whooping cough (pertussis) is a contagious respiratory infection caused by Bordetella pertussis. It can affect people of any age and may be particularly serious in babies and young children.

PCR testing looks for genetic material from the bacterium in a respiratory sample. The chance of detection depends on the timing of the test, the quality of the sample and any previous antibiotic treatment. A result should be interpreted together with symptoms, exposure history and clinical assessment.

Archived family price for two or more children: BGN 65.00 per test.

Archived turnaround: the next working day after 17:00, excluding Saturday and Sunday.

Sample and preparation: nasopharyngeal and throat swabs. The original notice recommends collection before eating or at least two hours after the last meal. Confirm the current instructions with the laboratory.
