What is this test?
Urine sediment is examined microscopically for red and white blood cells, epithelial cells, casts, crystals, microorganisms and other particles. It adds detail to chemical urinalysis.
Why might it be ordered?
- To clarify blood, protein or white-cell findings in urine.
- To investigate urinary or kidney symptoms when microscopy may guide the next test.
What sample is needed?
A fresh clean-catch midstream sample is commonly used. Follow the laboratory instructions and submit it promptly.
How should you prepare?
Prevent contamination and mention menstruation or recent strenuous exercise. Do not collect from a bedpan or non-sterile household container.
How should you understand the result?
Small numbers of some elements may be normal. The type, amount and pattern matter; bacteria seen by microscopy do not replace a culture when infection is suspected.
