What does this test include?
ROMA is a computational algorithm that combines CA 125, HE4 and menopausal status to assess the risk of an identified ovarian mass being malignant.
Why might it be ordered?
- For preoperative risk assessment of an ovarian mass already identified on imaging.
- To help guide referral to the most appropriate specialist or care setting.
What sample is needed?
A healthcare professional collects a venous blood sample. Depending on the method, the laboratory uses serum or plasma.
How should you prepare?
Menopausal status must be recorded correctly for the calculation. Report kidney disease and other conditions that may affect HE4 or CA 125. Tell the laboratory about all medicines, hormone treatments, vitamins and supplements you take. Do not stop or change treatment unless your clinician tells you to. Follow any instructions about fasting and the time of collection.
How are the results reported?
The result is a risk assessment, not a diagnosis. The threshold used depends on the method and menopausal status and should be taken from the laboratory report. A trend across consecutive measurements made with a comparable method is often more informative than a single value.
