What does this test include?
This automated blood count measures red cells, haemoglobin, haematocrit, platelets and red-cell indices, and also reports the main types of white blood cells. It gives a broad view of oxygen-carrying cells, immune cells and clot-forming platelets.
Why might it be ordered?
- To investigate tiredness, fever, infection, bruising or other symptoms.
- For routine monitoring or to follow a condition or treatment that can affect blood cells.
What sample is needed?
A blood sample is required. The laboratory chooses the correct tube and handles the sample for this test.
How should you prepare?
Fasting is usually unnecessary. Hydrate normally and tell your clinician about recent infection, strenuous exercise, pregnancy and medicines.
How are the results reported?
A high or low cell count has many possible explanations. The clinician considers which cell lines and indices changed, how large the change is and whether it persists.
