What is this test?
Microscopy of stool looks for visible forms of intestinal parasites, such as eggs, cysts, or parasite fragments. It assesses only the submitted specimen.
Why might it be ordered?
- For gastrointestinal symptoms or other evidence of possible parasitic infection.
- After travel or exposure when the test is clinically appropriate.
- For follow-up in settings that require a parasitology specimen.
What sample is needed?
A stool specimen is required. Use the laboratory container and collection instructions, and ask whether specimens on more than one day are needed.
How should you prepare?

How should you understand the result?
