What is this test?
Beta-2 microglobulin is a small protein on the surface of many cells. It can be used to evaluate and monitor certain blood disorders, but it is also strongly affected by kidney function.
Why might it be ordered?
- For prognostic evaluation or follow-up in certain lymphomas, myeloma, and other blood disorders.
- In some cases to assess kidney function or cell turnover according to the type of sample.
What sample is needed?
A healthcare professional collects a venous blood sample. Depending on the method, the laboratory uses serum or plasma.
How should you prepare?
Tell the laboratory about all medicines, hormone treatments, vitamins and supplements you take. Do not stop or change treatment unless your clinician tells you to. Follow any instructions about fasting and the time of collection.
How should you understand the result?
Elevation may be due to reduced kidney function, inflammation, infections, or increased cell turnover, not just tumor disease. A trend across consecutive measurements made with a comparable method is often more informative than a single value.
