What is this test?
Anti-dsDNA IgG are antibodies against double-stranded DNA. These are mostly associated with systemic lupus and may complement activity assessment in some patients.
Why might it be ordered?
- With a positive ANA and symptoms suggestive of systemic lupus.
- For follow-up in established lupus, especially along with C3, C4, urine and renal function.
What sample is needed?
A healthcare professional collects a venous blood sample. Depending on the method, the laboratory uses serum or plasma.
How should you prepare?
Tell the laboratory about all medicines, hormone treatments, vitamins and supplements you take. Do not stop or change treatment unless your clinician tells you to. Follow any instructions about fasting and the time of collection.
How should you understand the result?
The quantitative value reports the anti-dsDNA IgG level measured by that method. A positive result carries more weight with compatible symptoms, but changes over time do not always match disease activity. A positive result means the tested antibodies were detected, but it does not establish a diagnosis on its own. A negative result does not rule out every autoimmune condition.
