What is this test?
Androstenedione is a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal glands and gonads and is a precursor to testosterone and estrogens.
Why might it be ordered?
- For signs of increased androgens, such as abnormal hair growth, acne or menstrual irregularities.
- To assess adrenal and gonadal function along with other hormones.

A healthcare professional collects a venous blood sample. Depending on the method, the laboratory uses serum or plasma.
How should you prepare?
For women, the day of the cycle can be important. Report pregnancy, birth control and other hormone therapy. Tell the laboratory about all medicines, hormone treatments, vitamins and supplements you take. Do not stop or change treatment unless your clinician tells you to. Follow any instructions about fasting and the time of collection.
How should you understand the result?
The result is interpreted with testosterone, DHEA-S, 17-hydroxyprogesterone and the clinical findings; on its own, it does not identify the source of androgen excess. Your result is interpreted using the reference interval on the laboratory report and in the context of your symptoms, medical history and other test findings.
